1974 Classic White Corvette Coupe w/Black interior, 350/195hp, 4-spd. manual transmission.
The year 1974 ushered in a new era for American cars. The dream of the Federally mandated 5mph bumper was fully realized. And we think most of us would agree what followed, was a truly dark time in American car design. Whether it was an inability or just a lack of desire to design something better, very little of what came out of the Big Three during the mid ’70’s through the late ’80’s was inspiring to say the least due mostly to the big steel “girders” that adorned the front and back of American built at that time. However, there was one bright spot . . . and that was Corvette. For some reason, the only car that was able to seamlessly transform from the chrome to urethane era was America’s Sports Car.
The design of the ’74 completed the transformation that was started the previous year. The change incorporated two “energy absorbing” urethane caps; one for each end that covered shocks that were designed to absorb up to a 5mph front collision (2.5mph in the rear) without any damage to the structure underneath. At the same time, most, if not all of the other cars being built during that period used large (and aesthetically unpleasing) steel bumpers to accomplish what Corvette did beautifully and gracefully with urethane. And as usual, the design was way ahead of its time. It wasn’t until 1990 that the other cars fell into line and incorporated their own blended in urethane bumper covers.
