A Manual C8 Corvette? TREMEC May Have the Answer to Make It Possible!

For C8 owners dreaming of rowing their own gears, the wait may finally be over. TREMEC has unveiled an all-new 6-speed manual transaxle that could make a true manual-shift C8 Corvette a reality.

Built on the same architecture as the C8’s TR-9080 dual-clutch transmission, this new gearbox shares the same packaging and mounting points, opening the door for the first legitimate manual conversion option for the mid-engine C8 Corvette.

Rated for 800 lb-ft of torque, 1,000 horsepower, and 8,600 RPM, the new transaxle features helical-cut gears, a mechanical limited-slip differential, and an aluminum case that balances strength and weight.

Still, challenges remain. It’s unclear how to integrate a clutch pedal or modify the center console for a traditional shifter. And perhaps the biggest hurdle, how to make the highly computerized C8 recognize and function with a manual gearbox, is still unknown.

Even so, the thought of pairing C8 performance with a proper stick shift will make the Corvette purists buzz. The future of a manual-shifting Corvette just got a whole lot more interesting. Who knows, Chevy may already be working on making this an option?

W’s 1966.

As an industrial designer I love powerful form and function. And as a car nut growing up in Europe, coming to the US to study design, I will never forget the first time I saw a C2 Corvette. To then find out the original sketch was penned by Peter Brock (who went to my alma mater), meet him and discover the back story on how Bill Mitchel was inspired by late 50’s Italian concept cars, I knew I wanted one. All I could afford in 2014 was a rusty framed, flaking paint ’66 with a 2 speed powerglide transmission. I decided to make it a true drivers car, so I took some subtle design liberties once I had saved enough to get it restored: non-stock silver color (I wanted a warmer hue), period correct European Porsche replica seats, after market AC, dynamat insulation, black powder coated steelies with a red pinstripe and a tremec 5 speed transmission. I’ve put 20k miles on it since then and always have a big grin when driving it.

When Jim Leonard bought this 1969 Camaro Z/28 brand new, he didn’t just drive it—he protected it. From day one, he knew this car was something extraordinary. Instead of burning rubber, Jim put it on blocks, beginning a 40-year preservation plan that would make this Z/28 one of the most original, untouched examples in existence.

Finished in Olympic Gold with black stripes, this Z/28 still wears its factory paint, untouched interior, and matching-numbers drivetrain. It never left its hometown—and never lost its soul.
