Following the landmark addition of Chevrolet’s new small-block V-8 engine to the formerly underpowered Corvette for 1955, big news for 1957 came in the form of the upsized 283 CI V-8 and new list of performance options. While much has been written about chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov and his successful quest to transform Chevrolet’s early Corvette into a true high-performance machine, the importance of his work cannot be overstated.
During only his first three years on the job at GM, Arkus-Duntov almost single-handedly prevented the Corvette’s premature demise and convinced top Chevrolet and GM management to commit to building exciting cars and proving them in top-level competition. Working closely with Ed Cole, Chevrolet’s engineering chief, Arkus-Duntov personally tested and raced the Corvette, methodically developing it into a true legend, enhanced by availability of the new Rochester fuel-injection system for ’57.
The ’57 model year was certainly a milestone one for Corvette. The previous year Corvette went from being a Roadster to a Convertible, with actual roll-up windows. But in ’57, America’s Sports Car became a true performance car with the introduction of the aforementioned Rochester Ramjet mechanical fuel injection. And if you ordered RPO 579B you got the 283ci fuel injected engine with mechanical lifters and 283hp! One hp per ci!
In addition, ’57 was the first year for the 4-speed manual transmission! make Corvette a world-class sports car!
