The Legend. The Myth. The Mighty L88.
Seldom seen but always heard.

1969 L88 Corvette Automatic Coupe Makes History at the 2025 N.C.R.S. National Convention

The Corvette world is abuzz with excitement over a legendary Riverside Gold 1969 L88 Corvette Automatic Coupe, a car who’s original, certified engine still beats under its hood. This extraordinary machine stole the spotlight at the 2025 N.C.R.S. Nationals in Las Vegas, achieving an astonishing 98+ out of 100 and reaffirming its rightful place among the most celebrated Corvettes ever built.

A Storied Provenance

The journey of this exceptional L88 traces back to June 1986, when it was showcased in the prestigious Bloomington Gold Special Collection under the stewardship of noted Corvette aficionado Ed Mueller. Later, it became part of an elite private collection spanning New York and Beverly Hills, featuring twelve big-block Corvettes—including four L88s.

Thanks to Corvette Mike Vietro and a trusted colleague, the entire collection was preserved, securing a legacy of some of the most significant Corvettes in existence.

In December 1996, the Riverside Gold L88 began a new chapter under Vietro’s ownership. For nearly three decades, it held pride of place in a premier Northern California muscle car collection. In 2025, the car underwent a meticulous restoration at Mike’s Anaheim, California facility, expressly for NCRS judging—bringing this golden legend back to the national stage.

The Power and the Presence

Factory-rated at 430 horsepower but known to deliver over 550 horsepower on race fuel, this L88 embodies the raw, untamed energy of America’s golden era of performance. Known affectionately as “Goldie,” it retains its original engine, automatic transmission, side pipes, and black leather interior.

Accompanying the car is a treasure trove of documentation—including the original buyer’s deposit receipt from December 1968—attesting to its authenticity and unmatched provenance.

With only 17 L88 Corvettes ever built with an automatic transmission, this example represents the rarest blend of originality, performance, and pedigree. Following its latest NCRS triumph, the Riverside Gold L88 stands as a shining monument to Corvette’s ultimate big-block legend.

Condition

After spending more than three decades in long-term preservation, this L88 was meticulously restored with uncompromising attention to detail for N.C.R.S. National competition.
Every component—mechanical, cosmetic, and structural—was rebuilt, refinished, or preserved to factory specification.
The paintwork radiates depth and authenticity, the interior shows beautifully correct materials and finishes, and the engine bay exemplifies concours presentation.
It now stands as a benchmark restoration—a car that performs, presents, and documents at the highest level attainable.

Significance

The L88 option was a race-bred powerhouse offered only to serious competitors.
It deleted comfort items such as the radio and heater and added heavy-duty components throughout, including aluminum heads, a radical camshaft, and an 850 CFM Holley carburetor.
Chevrolet famously underrated the engine at 430 hp, though real output exceeded 550 hp.

What sets this car apart is not only its automatic transmission rarity (1 of 17) but also its survivor authenticity—its factory L88 engine remains intact, verified, and certified.

Few L88s can claim this level of originality, documentation, and award pedigree.

It is an extraordinary artifact of Corvette performance history.
