Coming into its final year, the first-generation Corvette had gone through no less than four distinct design changes, ending with the ’62. This year had some interesting changes, starting with the exterior, which now was only available in solid colors, eliminating the contrasting color “coves” that were first introduced in ’56. The overall design was less “adorned”, but cleaner and a bit more modern looking. But the big news was under the hood with the introduction of the larger and more powerful 327ci small block. There were four engines available, with the top choice being the 360hp fuelie. But for those who wanted almost all the power, but without fuel injection, then choosing RPO396 got you the carbureted 327/340hp engine with mechanical lifters.

The ’58 model year was a milestone for Corvette. This marked the third significant body revision since the car’s introduction in ’53.

Corvette was now longer and wider, giving passengers some welcome interior room. The ’58 was also unique in its exterior styling. The hood featured a simulated louvered hood and dual chrome trunk spears mounted on the trunk, making it a one year only design. Making it one of the most sought-after years to this day!

Among the various first-generation Corvettes produced, the updated 1956-1962 models struck a particularly strong chord with buyers with their distinctive styling and fast-rising performance levels. Steady improvements boosted sales and justified the Corvette’s continued production, with Chevrolet finally earning a profit from its heavy investment in the model for the first time in 1958.
