It is that time again, for the mega car event called the Monterey Car Week & Concours D’elegance. It runs from August 21st thru the 26th this year.

The event dates back over half a century, where only 200 of the best collector cars in the world roll onto the legendary 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links to be shown and compete. Only a handful of those will receive official recognition for style, technical merit and historical accuracy.

In 1947, a Duesenberg was often the car of dreams. For then-10-year-old Roger P. Willbanks that was certainly true.

“It was definitely an over-the-top car for its day, especially in terms of its performance,” explains Roger. “The mechanics—the engine—were beyond belief! It had multiples of the power of any other passenger car in production at that time.”

Growing up in Denver, Colorado, Roger knew of the Duesenberg marque only as it existed in the pages of books. But one day in 1947 that changed.

“I was riding my bike through my South Denver neighborhood when I saw a car I had not seen before,” says Roger. “Strangely, on a residential street, I saw my first Duesenberg!”

He wanted a closer look, of course, so he parked his bike and went over to the car, being sure to examine it from a safe distance.

“I got as close as I could without touching it,” says Roger.

Yes, there are other aftermarket companies offering modifications for your new Corvette, some that even go higher than 1,000hp, but this is a factory ordered and warrantied Grand Sport. When you order this, or the lower powered 835hp version, the car goes from Chevy to Specialty Vehicle Engineering, and then back to the dealership for you to pick up completed.

The cost is not cheap for these extra horses though. First you have to buy a Grand Sport, make sure you check the box on option Z07 that bundles improved brakes, suspension and aerodynamic parts

This past Thursday was the final day of Judging at the National NCRS Convention in Las Vegas. Both of our cars scored very well. The black 1963 340 split window did 98 points, enough to be awarded the Duntov Mark of Excellence! And the white 1967 435 big block Coupe did a whopping 99 points. The remainder of the cars were judged later in the day, and they even talked my wife, Kelly into judging! That afternoon we loaded them up to get ready for the awards banquet.
