GM has announced an extended holiday pause for Corvette production, lasting three weeks instead of the usual two. The Bowling Green plant in Kentucky will close on Friday, December 13, 2024, and reopen on Monday, January 6, 2025.
This extended break marks one of the longest holiday temporary production pauses in Corvette history, though GM has not confirmed a specific reason. Possible explanations include managing production levels, implementing line improvements, or conducting maintenance.
Peter Brock, the renowned automotive designer and author, had been captivated by cars from a young age. His fascination with design and aerodynamics led him to join General Motors in the ’50s, where he found himself at the forefront of automotive innovation. The Sting Ray project was a turning point, a canvas where he could blend artistry with engineering. The genesis of the Sting Ray wasn’t just about crafting a car; it was about challenging conventions. During the Wynn Concours, Mike met up with Peter and reminisced about the bold decisions—the split rear window, the iconic side vents, and the streamlined silhouette that made the Sting Ray instantly recognizable. As Peter went through the book with Mike, a sense of pride washed over him. The Sting Ray wasn’t just a car but a legacy—a testament to innovation and the pursuit of greatness. It had left an indelible mark on automotive history, a legacy that inspired generations of enthusiasts. Exclusive to Thundering Thursday readers, we’re offering signed books by the author expected to arrive before Christmas. Priced at $40 per book plus shipping and handling of $14.85. Order by December 11th 1:00 PST to secure yours in time for the holidays. Reserve yours today by Clicking Here.

Since the age of 15, I’ve restored over 45 cars and have proudly owned my 1966 Big Block Corvette Coupe for 30 years. As a longtime docent for the Pebble Beach Concours and the Mullin Automotive Museum, I’ve had the privilege to show many remarkable cars. Last year, while serving as a docent at the Las Vegas Concours, I had the honor of meeting Peter Brock, the iconic designer behind my Mid-Year Corvette.
When I shared my Corvette’s story with him, he was thrilled, especially to hear that I’ve kept it road-ready with modern upgrades for regular driving. He gifted me a signed copy of his book, Corvette Stingray: Genesis of an American Icon, making it a treasured part of my Corvette’s journey. This unforgettable encounter brought me closer to the rich history of my car. To me, these cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed—and I continue to take my Corvette on the road three to four times a week. It has been awarded “Best in Class” and “Best in Show” at Corvettes West’s Big Bear Blast and was featured in The Art of Corvette by Randy Leffingwell. My thanks go to Peter Brock for his incredible work and for deepening my connection to my Corvette’s legacy. Richard E. |
