National Corvette Museum Announces New Exhibit On Anniversary Of Sinkhole

A decade has passed since a colossal sinkhole engulfed prized cars at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green.

At around 5:30 a.m. on February 12, 2014, the cave-in tragically claimed eight cars from the museum’s multi-million-dollar Corvette collection. The event was captured on video and images from the museum’s security cameras, quickly gaining viral attention.

Director of Collections, Robert Maxhimer, remarked, “It really put the museum on the map and exposed it to people who may not have known of its existence.” The museum experienced a resurgence, becoming a tourist hotspot and attracting new investments.

On Monday Maxhimer announced an upcoming exhibit titled “Ground to Sky: The Sinkhole Reimagined,” set to open this summer. The exhibit will feature the cars recovered from the sinkhole, including the fully restored one-millionth Corvette by GM, along with a captivating time-lapse of its restoration process.

The exhibit will debut on June 14th and will be on display until September 15th.

John H’s 1960 Resto-Mod

This 1960 Corvette was a novice C1 Corvette purchase. Because of missing original parts and condition there was the slow recognition that restoration to original was economically futile.  It was decided that resto-modification was needed to return the Corvette to drivability and usefulness.

The conversion was designed and built by Bill Verboon and his son, Doug, Gold Top Restoration, Hanford, California.  Bill was a lifetime Corvette enthusiast, Corvette restorer and master builder and built several Corvettes besides the one described.

Bill’s good friend Paul Newman of Car Creations supplied the C4 chassis modifications.  A Grand Sport Corvette theme was decided upon and the LT4 Corvette engine used in 1996 GS Corvettes was selected. When completed the engine had been stroked to 383 cubic inches and ported, all new internal components with a compression ratio of 11.4, ZF 6 speed transmission, 3.92 rear end and subtle body and interior modifications and upgrades.

It has never been trailered when it can be driven and was in Vette Magazine February 2005.  It received the top award at the Super Chevy Show Tucson, Arizona November 2003, Plastic Fantastic Corvette Show in San Diego, California May 16, 2004 and the Black Hills Corvette Classic, Spearfish, South Dakota in 2010.

It continues to be driven and enjoyed.

Comic of the Week

Some Random Thoughts

There’s nothing wrong with you that an expensive operation can’t prolong.

Being a mom means never buying the right amount of produce. Either everyone suddenly loves grapes and a week’s worth are eaten in one afternoon, or fruit flies are congregating around the rotting bananas.

I saw a study that said speaking in front of a crowd is considered the number one fear of the average person. Number two was death. This means to the average person, if you have to be at a funeral, you would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy.

My 1965 Corvette arrived today and I could not be happier. This car is beautiful!! I was a little nervous about making a substantial purchase like this over the internet. These guys were very accommodating and a pleasure to work with. Corvette Mike has a very good reputation in the collector car hobby and I can certainly attest to their knowledge and professionalism. A shout out to Mike, Troy, and Jeff for all the help. I was pleasantly surprised when this thing rolled off the truck. Thanks again guys.
