Better to be safe than sorry. General Motors is recalling more than 4 million vehicles across the globe over a software defect that can prevent the airbags from deploying in the event of a crash, the company announced Friday. The defect has been connected to at least one death and three injuries.

The recall affects a wide variety of cars, trucks, and sport-utility vehicles from model years 2014 through 2017, including such enthusiast favorites as the Chevrolet Corvette and the Chevy SS.

Out of 4.28 million vehicles being recalled worldwide, 3.6 million of them are located in the United States. GM will contact owners of the afflicted vehicles to inform them they need to visit the dealership, where employees will update the software free of charge. Concerned owners can also check their VINs against a list of affected vehicles on both the GM and National Highway Transportation Safety Administration websites.

For Corvette enthusiasts, the name Dick Guldstrand should be familiar. Guldstrand, or Mr. Corvette to his fans, was a legendary Corvette racing driver who passed away at the age of 88 last year.

A few weeks ago, we blogged about a 1978 Chevrolet Corvette that got stolen at the Woodward Dream Cruise. Well, Kelly Robinson got ‘Stella’ back, well kind of, as it was missing the wheels and motor. This car meant a lot to her and she was heartbroken when it disappeared. “This was my car for 16 years. I bought this car when I was struggling in my early 20s and I said I want a Corvette, I’m going to a buy a Corvette. All my family has Corvettes, it’s my turn now,” Robinson commented.

So when her insurance company said they would replace the missing items and get the car back on the road, she leaped with joy. Soon, Kelly and Stella will be cruising the roads again. We are just suckers for happy endings.
