Through the decades, we here at Corvette Mike have seen just about every configuration of America’s Sports Car that can be sighted! Every year, every style, every engine and every color. The mid-years (’63-’67) are still pretty much considered the most popular of the first three generations. And as a result of anything being wildly popular, values tend to head north accordingly. The ones that tend to be up there in price are the all-original or completely frame- off restored examples. What we don’t tend to see anymore are the cars that were modified or customized way back in the day. And have managed to escape the restoration shop all these decades later!
Well, we just happened to run across this ’66 that came to us from a local So. CA. resident. His father (a renown drag racer of the era) acquired the car back in the ’60’s. His intention was to turn it into a custom street racer. He started the project, but never quite finished it. And as you see, the work done was very much “of the era”. Big rear fender flares anticipating big 50 series rubber, velour tuck ‘n roll upholstery (even the top headliner). It’s cool!
So, it sat in his garage for many years. When he passed away, his son inherited the car and had intended to complete to project in his father’s memory. But you know the saying . . . Life gets in the way. And in his case, it did. Reluctantly, he decided to sell it and that’s where we come it. We bought the car, got it up and running, put 4 brand new radial tires on it, did some minor paint and interior work, and . . . here she is. The car has it’s correct, matching #’s engine under the hood and features a new carb, radiator and some other stuff. It’s a diamond in the rough. A project. And the beauty of it, is you can make it into anything you want! Continue the transformation into a semi-custom, go all-out hot or resto-mod, or take her back to stock! Whatever you decide to do is fine by us. Just have a blast doing it!
