When the third generation Corvette was introduced in ’68 no one expected production to last for 15 years! But, it turned out to be the longest run of any generation Corvette, before or since! There were, of course many changes over the years, but the basic “Shark” body remained a constant. One of the more distinct design elements was the flat rear window. From ’68 to ’72, this window was removable, along with the twin roof panels, giving both driver and passenger a Targa-like driving experience. Seventy three was a transitional year, with the Federally mandated urethane front bumper installed, but keeping the chrome rear bumper for one more year. By ’77 the Shark was due for a major change. And that change came in ’78 in the form of a “Bubble Back” rear window. This was done not only for design, but for practicality reasons, giving the ’78 a lot more room in the back! The Corvette was now a car that you could take a long trip in and actually have room for more than a duffle bag! The seats were also redesigned to fold almost flat when folded forward for easy access to the rear compartment. But, of course, change is always welcome. Many die-hard Shark fans didn’t immediately fall in love with the new rear window. But the design eventually grew on people and subsequent generations used it in one form or another. And in ’82, it became a functioning hatchback (in the Collector Edition) for the first time. However, the ’68-’77’s have a very strong following. And even the urethane bumper cars are starting to come into their own, as values are rising.
The owner of this “Time Capsule” ’77 must have felt that the car was well worth preserving in like new condition when he purchased it brand new. It’s only been driven 1,500 miles since and looks almost the same way it did when it rolled out of the St. Louis assembly plant! Not only is this one-owner ’77 beautiful . . . and original down to the Firestone Radial 500’s! It’s also the recipient of the N.C.R.S. 4-Star Bowtie Award! Not for sale.
